Originally, two applications were sent into the ATF reqeusting the creation of the AVA "Northern Neck" and "George Washington Birthplace". Instead of choosing one name over the other, the feds decided to combine the two names, making the name so long it doesn't fit on a wine label unless using a font size under 6 pt. The region maintains a moderate climate because of its proximity to Chesapeake Bay to the east. Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are the dominant varietals, while French-American hybrids are finding their way into many a vineyard.
