“S” appellations

Sierra Foothills

The Sierra Foothills run for 170 miles along the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This AVA can be claimed by wines that are derived from grapes from more than one of the following California counties: Yuba, Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Mariposa. It was originally planted by gold rush miners in 1849, but these vines were nearly all wiped out when Prohibition set in around the 1930s. There has been a renewed surge in interest in this appellation by Napa and Sonoma wineries looking for inexpensive lands to source grapes for their wines. The Sierra Foothills AVA generally has warm days and cool nights, with soil containing decomposed granite from the eroding mountainsides.
