Azal Tinto

A rustic and low-yield varietal grown almost exclusively in the western portion of the Iberian peninsula. It is often blended with other varieties to make fruity and intense wines in the Minho region of northern Portugal. These wines are usually labeled "Vinho Verde" not for their color but for the fact the Portuguese drink them very young. A local specialty it is seldom exported.

The best versions come from the northern area of Minho in Northern Portugal. Azal Tinto is also grown in the Rías Baixas and Ribiero regions of western Spain where it is known as the Caíño Longo.
